What are the shipping requirements for lithium ion batteries?

In addition, lithium-ion cells and batteries shipped by themselves must be shipped at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity. Lithium batteries are dangerous goods, and all of the regulatory requirements must be complied with, as set out in the Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations.

What is the proper shipping name for lithium ion batteries?

Proper Shipping Name Mark – “Lithium ion batteries packed with equipment” or “Lithium ion batteries contained in equipment”, as appropriate. Note: if the package contains both lithium ion batteries packed with and contained in equipment, the proper shipping name is “Lithium Ion Batteries Packed with Equipment”.

Can You ship lithium ion batteries internationally?

Whether shipments are international or domestic, it’s best to check with the air carrier for any additional requirements. When it comes to international shipping of lithium-ion batteries, ocean freight is the primary mode of transportation.

What information do you need to ship a lithium ion battery?

Shippers must clearly declare the contents of their shipment, including the type and quantity of lithium-ion batteries, their UN numbers, and classification details. Failure to provide accurate information can lead to delays, fines, or even shipment rejection at the port.

Do lithium ion batteries have to be on a shipper's declaration?

No. For lithium ion batteries shipped in accordance with Section IA or Section IB of PI 965, which must be on a Shipper’s Declaration, the Shipper’s Declaration includes a certification statement “I declare that all of the applicable air transport requirements have been met.”
