How much energy does Georgia use?
About 80% of Georgia’s electricity generation comes from hydro resources (80.5% in 2021), with the remainder produced from natural gas and from a 20.7‑megawatt (MW) wind power plant (83.4 GWh in 2020). The residential sector has the largest share of final energy consumption (1.41 Mtoe in 2020), followed closely by transport (1.34 Mtoe in 2020).
What is Georgia's energy supply?
Georgia’s total primary energy supply (TPES) amounts to 5.1 Mtoe (2019) and it is dominated by natural gas (45%) and oil (27%), while renewable energy (RE) comprises 20.4% (Figure 1). Georgia’s electricity demand is covered mainly by the domestic production of hydro (66%), supplemented by imports (11%) and thermal generation (22%) (Figure 2).
What percentage of Georgia's energy is renewable?
The share of renewable energy in Georgia’s energy supply in 2020 was 19.5%, of which 15% was electricity produced by hydroelectric plants and 5% was biomass-based (i.e. firewood and agricultural waste used for heating).
What is Georgia's new law on energy and water supply?
The new Law on Energy and Water Supply, approved by Georgia’s parliament in 2019, was developed in co‑operation with the Energy Community to transpose the requirements of key electricity and gas directives into Georgian legislation.
What is Georgia's energy policy?
Georgia is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policy making for the energy sector. Georgia has a developed a stable and reliable energy sector based on hydropower and fuelwood. Energy policy focuses on building hydropower stations and diversifying fossil fuel supply.
How does Georgia generate electricity?
Georgia’s electricity demand is covered mainly by the domestic production of hydro (66%), supplemented by imports (11%) and thermal generation (22%) (Figure 2). The remaining 1% comes from other RE sources, such as wind and solar. Being heavily reliant on hydropower means that the country’s RE generation is sensitive to rainfall.
