How do I export electricity to SEG?
Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or above. Once these conditions are met, you can apply for a special export tariff with an SEG licensee, who will then pay you for any excess electricity you generate and export back to the grid.
Do solar panels have a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
The good news for solar panel owners is that large energy companies are obliged to pay for the excess energy that is exported, under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme. What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
Can I apply for SEG If I have an energy storage system?
If you have an energy storage system in your renewables installation, you can still apply for SEG. For example, your battery could store electricity from the grid before exporting it later. Energy suppliers don’t have to pay you for non-renewable electricity exported to the grid, but some may choose to do so.
What are SEG rates?
These may be referred to as SEG tariffs, SEG rates, export rates, or given a unique name by the supplier. Rates vary widely but, on average, solar panel owners are still receiving far less for their exported electricity than companies charge to supply it.
What is a SEG & how does it work?
The SEG is a replacement for the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme, which closed to new applicants in 2019. People who took out a contract before then will still get their FIT payments until the end of the contract. FIT rates, particularly the earlier ones, were very generous and are index-linked, so they increase in line with inflation.
What is a SEG tariff?
Ofgem's guidance for SEG licensees states there is no prescribed tariff rate, type or length, but the tariff must offer an above-zero rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) of export at all times in order to be compliant.
