FAQs 6

How did solar perform in 2023 vs 2022?

Combined wind and solar generation increased by a record 90 TWh and installed capacity by 73 GW. Solar continued its strong growth with 56 GW of additional capacity in 2023, compared to 41 GW in 2022 (+37%). But solar failed to match its 2022 year-on-year generation growth (+36 TWh in 2023 versus +48 TWh in 2022).

Should solar energy be prioritised in national planning decisions?

The public supports (or strongly supports) the prioritisation of solar energy in national planning decisions (58 per cent) with a minority opposed (seven per cent). Within this, 63 per cent of adults aged over 55 say solar energy should be prioritised.

Will solar power increase in 2021?

Globally, solar PV electricity generation is expected to increase by 145 TWh, almost 18%, to approach 1 000 TWh in 2021. We expect hydropower generation to increase further in 2021 through a combination of economic recovery and new capacity additions from large projects in China.

How many solar PV installations are there in the UK?

The use of solar PV to generate electricity in the UK has grown rapidly since 2010, increasing capacity from 95 MW to 13,800 MW at the end of 2021. There are now over one million solar PV installations in the UK.

What percentage of people support a solar farm?

17 per cent of people who live near a solar farm have become more supportive of solar energy over time. Only two percent have become more opposed. The increase in support has been particularly pronounced in the East of England (26 per cent), the East Midlands (24 per cent), and the South East (21 per cent).

Do Americans want more solar panels?

Fully 89% of Americans favor more solar panel farms, just 9% oppose. A similarly large share supports more wind turbine farms (83% favor, 14% oppose). By comparison, the public is more divided over expanding the production of nuclear and fossil fuel energy sources. Specifically, 45% favor more offshore oil and gas drilling, while 52% oppose.
