FAQs 6

How important is the microgrid concept?

The 84 published articles included are a testament to the importance of the microgrid concept for current and future energy systems worldwide. Further, the broad participation demonstrates the global reach of our joint research endeavour.

What is a remote microgrid?

Remote microgrids: These are also called off-grid microgrids. Remote microgrids can operate in island mode and be physically isolated from the utility grid in case of a lack of affordable and available transmissions or distribution infrastructure in the nearby area.

What is a grid connected microgrid?

Grid-connected microgrids: They have a physical connection to the utility grid through a switching mechanism at the point of common coupling (PCC); however, they can be disconnected into island mode and reconnected back to the main grid when required.

How does a microgrid work?

For electricity generation, microgrids typically use some combination of backup diesel generators and renewables such as solar panels. Microgrids can incorporate battery systems to store electricity and deploy it during outages or when grid demand spikes. Who can benefit from a microgrid?

How does a Takagi-Sugeno microgrid control scheme work?

The control scheme uses fuzzy Takagi–Sugeno models to predict generation and consumption of the microgrids at both control levels. The configuration is compared to two conventional EMSs from the literature, and it reduces lost supply, halves storage device cycling, and reduces the overall system cost by about 1.5%.

Are microgrid energy management systems becoming more popular this year?

According to the figure, microgrid energy management systems continue attracting considerable attention. On the other hand, newer elements, i.e. hydrogen, peer-to-peer, virtual power plants, etc. have become more popular this year.
