What are the requirements for a PV installation?
Virtually all domestic PV installations will fall under the scope of Part P. Part P requires the relevant Building Control department to be notified and approve the work. There are two routes to comply with the requirements of Part P: Notify the relevant Building Control department before starting the work.
How far off a roof should a solar system be mounted?
Most residential rooftop PV arrays are mounted between 4” and 6” off the surface of the roof and are parallel, or nearly parallel to the roof surface. A system on a flat roof will be mounted at a slight angle in most cases to prevent pooling of water on the surface of the solar panels.
What are the requirements for mounting a solar module?
Mounting structure shall be made from durable, corrosion resistant, UV-proof materials. Modules shall be fixed on the bracket solidly. In regions with heavy snowfall in winter, adjust the height of the mounting system so that the lower edge of the module is not covered by snow.
Can solar PV systems be installed on a pitched roof?
The guidelines also say that provision must be made for ventilation behind the solar PV modules to provide cooling. With the introduction of MCS012 in March 2012 we would now expect all MCS certified installers of solar PV systems to install solar PV systems on pitched roofs using only MCS012 certified roof fixings.
Are there any UK standards relating to a PV installation?
While many UK standards apply in general terms, at the time of writing there is still relatively little which specifically relates to a PV installation. However, there are two documents which specifically relate to the installation of these systems that are of particular relevance:
How a roofing PV system should be installed?
The roofing PV system shall be installed after being evaluated by construction experts or engineers and with oficial analysis results for the entire structure. It shall be proved capable of supporting extra weight of system racking structures and PV modules.
